Woodturning is an absorbing hobby, but most people find it difficult to learn without guidance. I give one-to-one tuition at my studio in London, and work with complete beginners as well as those with some experience.
I offer an introduction to bowl making for those who are drawn to it but may not want to get too deeply involved. This is usually a half day course, and makes a great 'experience' gift. It will give you an insight into woodturning, and you will use the tools to make your own unique bowl.
My longer courses, in half-day sessions if you wish, aim to give a thorough grounding in the subject as a foundation for further development. We will cover health and safety issues, tool selection, sharpening and use, timber selection and preparation and, if required, advice on equipment purchase. You will normally begin by making a bowl. You will get a feel for how the tools are used, before going on to spindle turning, covering the use of spindle gouges and the skew chisel.
Sessions are very informal and flexible, so you can work at your own pace. I am happy to tailor the lessons to your own requirements if you have any particular issues that you would like to cover, problems that need trouble-shooting, or if you would like to make some particular item.
Starting and finishing times are flexible, and lessons can be on any day of the week. Refreshments and the wood used are included at no additional charge. The cost is very reasonable.
